Tips on Handling Data Storage Tape Cartridges

  • Minimize the risk of dropping your tapes by not stacking or carrying more than six cartridges at a time.
  • Do not place dirty or damaged data storage tape cartridges in a drive.
  • Use finger tips whenever possible for lifting a single data storage tape cartridge.
  • Keep leader blocks in place and doors shut to prevent tape damage.
  • Never touch tape surfaces as fingerprints can leave harmful residue that can create head-to-tape separation and may result in loss of signal.
  • Always use proper protective packaging of your tape cartridges when moving or shipping them in order to guarantee the full life of the cartridge.
  • Maintain proper storage and operating temperatures at all times for your data tapes. Consult the packaging on your media or speak to your Media Recovery representative for more information.
