DatacenterTrak™ FAQs: Answers on How RFID Data Protection Technology Works
How will Media Recovery determine the exact configuration for each Datacenter and the surrounding facilities?
Our staff is specially trained to evaluate each facility’s unique requirements and provide flexible options customized for you. Our team has been designing and installing passive and active RFID systems since 1998. We have the expertise and data protection experience to evaluate your risks and determine the solutions to best meet your needs. What does RFID stand for? How does RFID work?
RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification. RFID asset tracking systems use wireless RFID tags to transmit signals from a few feet to several hundred to automatically identify, track, monitor, and protect assets, employees, and vehicles.I’ve heard that the asset tag on the tape is placed under the bar code label. Does that mean that I have to remove all of my labels, attach the tag, and then re-apply the label (or the new label)?
All existing tape libraries will need to be converted over to the new RFID label system. For your convenience, Media Recovery does offer tape re-labeling services as part of our turnkey solutions for data protection. When re-labeling a tape library, it is important to remember that there is only a single cartridge location permitted by international standards for a bar code data cartridge label. To help make sure the new label is in compliance with all international standards, we have designed a RFID inlay that integrates into the volser label so as not to interfere with your current automatic cartridge retrieval systems or data cartridge computer drives.
If the tag is placed under the label and the tape needs to be replaced, can the tag be moved to the new tape or do I need to use a new tag?
Currently, IBM, STK, and all other ATL manufacturers highly recommend that barcode labels NOT be re-used. This recommendation would not change with the new label since adhesive failure could happen on a re-used label. Can this system be used with other equipment in addition to data tapes for comprehensive data protection?
Absolutely. This data protection system can be used to track any and all types of highly sensitive or expensive equipment, such as electronic tracking equipment, servers, server racks and cabinets, laptops, medical testing equipment—essentially any piece of equipment or asset that carries the risk of being stolen or lost.I’ve heard that the active tag (battery-powered) is placed inside a TURTLE® case. Will the active tag also work with metal cases and other plastic, non- TURTLE® cases for data protection?
The dual-active tags will be molded into the TURTLE® case for data protection. These tags can also be adhered to the outside of other plastic and metal cases and will function the same as with the TURTLE® case units.I’ve heard that this RFID technology will tie into a Tape Management System (TMS) system. Does it work with all TMS systems? How is that done?
The system is based on standard SQL relational database software and can be integrated into any system that employs or can talk to a relational database, including most TMS systems. The interface would be similar to the interface used on some current barcode scanning systems. Speak to a Media Recovery representative to find out more about integration for your particular TMS system. Can you give me an idea of the price of the system?
When considering the purchase of a RFID-based system for data protection, it’s important to consider your overall ROI. Consider how many millions of dollars are spent on data and equipment losses every year, in addition to the cost of notifying your customers that their personal or financial data may have been compromised. DatacenterTrak™ helps you prevent these costly losses, and often pays for itself within several months. As DatacenterTrak™ is a highly flexible and customizable solution, pricing for your particular application will depend on many factors, including: number of tapes to be tracked, number of employees to be tracked, number and size of the Datacenter entrances, and the number of other assets the system will be asked to track, such as servers and/or laptops and/or other types of valuable equipment.
